Arabic Word Art made on Sudnay 26 March 2023
On the 26th of March, the Arabic Language and Culture Association of South Australia (ALCASA) and the History Trust of SA Migration Museum hosted two workshops out of eight as part of the Ahlan Wa Sahlan exhibition workshops project. The two Arabic word art workshops led by the talented Adelaide-based artist Ahmed ElKhalidi took place where participants were encouraged to embed Arabic script in a creative manner within their artworks. Some exquisite designs reinforced the theme of Arabic hospitality through illustrations of Arab coffee (ahwe, قهوة) or words associated with common Arabic greetings (e.g.,tfaddalu تفضّلوا, nawwartu نوّرتوا, elbayt baytkum, البيت بيتكم, zaretna el barake زارتنا البركة), whereas others let their hands flow freely to produce their own names or other words in Arabic free style artistic writing. Thank you to the ALCASA volunteers for their support on the day, and as always, the wonderful participants for tapping into their creativity skills to promote intercultural understanding through Arabic script. It was an enjoyable experience, and we look forward to the six upcoming workshops supported by the Multicultural Affairs, Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
